Churchill Style:The Art of Being Winston Churchill Barry Singer
The study of singers´ art has emerged as a prominent area of inquiry within musicology in recent years. ´Female Singers on the French Stage, 1830-1848´ shifts the focus from the artwork onstage to the labour that went on behind the scenes. Through extensive analysis of primary source documents, Kimberly White explores the profession of singing, operatic culture, and the representation of female performers on the French stage between 1830 and 1848, and reveals new perspectives on the social, economic, andcultural status of these women. The book attempts to reconstruct and clarify contemporary practices of the singer at work, including vocal training, debuts, rehearsals and performance schedules, touring, benefit concerts, and retirement, as well as the strategies utilized in publicity and image making. Dozens of case studies, many compiled from singers´ correspondence and archival papers, shed light on the performers´ successes and struggles at a time when Paris was the operatic centre of Europe.
Best known as the lone female correspondent on Comedy Central´s The Daily Show, Samantha Bee taps into her past for her new memoir, I Know I Am, But What Are You? She explains the funniness of Canadians, and tells Kurt about her worst-ever job: a painful stint (in her late twenties) performing as the Japanese anime character Sailor Moon. Next, damaged homes are the focus of artist Alison Elizabeth Taylor´s show at New York´s James Cohan Gallery, called Foreclosed. A native of Las Vegas, one of the cities hit hardest by the mortgage crisis, Taylor snuck into empty houses in the region. Her pictures show the frustration and rage that homeowners took out on their repossessed houses. Kurt asks Taylor why she used the challenging medium of inlaid wood to recast quick images of vandalism. Then, Kurt´s brother David Andersen went to L.A. to pursue rock n´ roll thirty years ago, but today he´s one of the top piano technicians in southern California. Now rock stars are his clients, along with film composers and jazz musicians. Produced by Studio 360´s Derek John. Finally, a new play opened recently that had a very exclusive audience: patrons had to go to Sing Sing Correctional Facility to see it. It´s called Starting Over, and prisoners wrote and performed it. Produced by Jordan Sayle and Studio 360´s Pejk Malinovski. [Broadcast Date: June 5, 2010] 1. Language: English.
