From acclaimed romance author Ellyn Oaksmith comes a novel of change, challenges, and ultimately kindness.... Being overly kind isn´t in Kylie Harrow´s nature. This has never been more evident than when Kylie vents her frustrations to an innocent employee - and the whole scene is posted online, tanking her career and earning her the dubious distinction of ´´world´s worst boss´´. But when she flees home to the South, Kylie finds her childhood home has changed. The high school quarterback is now the hot and handsome sheriff. Her mother has turned her home into a nudist colony. And, worst of all, having heard about her daughter´s exploits, her mother won´t let her in the door until Kylie completes 50 kind acts in 50 days. The task seems easy enough at first - and may even help repair her media image - but it quickly turns into a hilarious quest that leads Kylie down a bumpy road filled with new challenges. What started as a gimmick to save her career evolves into a mission to save a spunky old woman and her little dog from homelessness. Bad harvests and worse weather spark acts of violence and murder. In the midst of the crisis, some High Holders call for repeals of the Codis Legis, taking authority away from the Rex. The Supreme Court ruled on several landmark cases this week — not only the Affordable Healthcare Act, but also a challenge to Arizona´s controversial, and influential, immigration law. The court ruled that most, but not all, of the law was unconstitutional. It comes on the heels of President Obama’s announcement that his administration would not deport the 800,000 undocumented immigrants under 30 who arrived here as children. Next, the new movie Beasts of the Southern Wild is a Louisiana fairy tale with a six-year-old hero. Hushpuppy lives with her father in an isolated bayou netherworld they call the Bathtub, a tiny community of scavengers separated from the mainland by a levee. When a storm nearly washes the Bathtub away, Hushpuppy struggles to survive and to make sense of her perilous place in the universe. Then, just in time for Canada’s 145th birthday (July 1 is Canada Day, in case you forgot), Studio 360 gives our northern neighbor a brand makeover. For the last several weeks, we’ve been looking at the image challenge After that, Kurt Andersen and Jian Ghomeshi, the host of Q, the CBC´s daily arts and culture show go head to head in a cross-border cultural quiz. The North American showdown is the culmination to our month-long redesign project. While Studio 360 has been rebranding Canada, Q has been redesigning America. And finally, Canadian folk-rock musicians — Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Cowboy Junkies, k.d. lang, to name a few — have made it big south of the border while retaining something essentially Canadian in their music. Perhaps it’s a sense of longing born of Canada’s wide, empty spaces. [Broadcast Date: June 30, 2012] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt Andersen.
For 60 years Baley has kept a secret. One that could get him killed. One that could get everybody killed. You see, Baley is an intelligent machine, what everyone calls an Inn-eye. Humans created Inn-eyes in their own image. They look and act like humans. They even die like humans, at a time set the moment they were built. When that time arrives, each Inn-eye´s energy cell dies and so does the Inn-eye. And 60 years ago Baley´s energy cell died. But Baley did not die. Highram Throttle is the vicious chieftain of the Kill-Them-All movement. He wants to rid the Known of the Inn-eye scourge once and for all. Throttle believes there are Inn-eyes - maybe even just one - who have outlived their programming. If he could find that immortal Inn-eye, humans would rise up with him and kill them all. Fate has a wicked sense of humor. Registration is imposed, and every Inn-eye must return to its place of birth to verify its unique identification code. Baley is put in charge, and he reports directly to Highram Throttle. Baley could thwart Throttle´s plan and save the Inn-eye species by taking his own life. But Baley doesn´t want to do that. Baley wants to live. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Andrew Tell. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/098064/bk_acx0_098064_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
